Inspiration from Small Acts

Everyone at TDIndustries is on a first-name basis. People know each other's names and strive to use it in the form and pronunciation the Partner prefers. Every TDPartner receives a personalized name badge.

We display casual worksite snapshots of our production and service Partners in the offices so we have an opportunity to connect their name to their face and make them feel welcome when we see them. Letters and materials are even addressed to individual Partners using a nickname, if the Partner prefers that.

When a Partner has been at TD for five years, their picture is added to our oak wall, and it remains there forever after 20 years of service as a reminder of the many contributions they have made.

We believe that small acts of recognition in the workplace go many miles in demonstrating the value of every person on our team and inspire all to serve each other with respect and kindness.

TDIndustries focuses on "best practices" because the company believes that every Partner can be a source of innovation and talent that contributes to the success of the firm.

TDIndustries is recognized as a leader in the construction industry with its Total Quality Management Program. For the past 19 consecutive years, TDIndustries has received numerous awards from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), a national association representing more than 25,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms in 79 chapters across the United States.

Our Partners take great pride in the work they perform and consider their projects as contributions to society. We help build the schools, hospitals and office buildings that provide valuable services to their communities. We are changing the skylines of the cities in which we work. On occasion, building owners allow our tradesmen to leave their mark on the project in a very visible way. If you know where to look, you can find the names of every TDPartner who worked on the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

The success of TDIndustries has become the focus of case studies and capstone classes at Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University and The University of Dallas. Young people and rising executives alike are learning from the examples we set.

One of the greatest inspirations for all TDPartners is the history of the firm's recognition as a Great Place to Work. Our induction onto FORTUNEmagazine's "All-Star" list continues to inspire every new and long-time TDPartner to excel in his or her job at the jobsite or the office.

People often comment that TDIndustries "feels different" the minute they walk through the door. We believe that feeling emanates from our genuine spirit of Partnership and camaraderie. At TDIndustries, we constantly strive to recognize the best in every individual and support each Partner's goals to grow professionally.

Recognizing the Power of One

The Power of One promotes and encourages Partners to share their expertise with and support the efforts of the various business units and departments in the company. This becomes an avenue too for public recognition and "thank yous."

One of the common elements of our monthly Business Report meetings, which is televised to all branches, is the sharing of stories by each Business Unit Manager about the many ways the Power of One has occurred within their unit during the month. These stories often show remarkable sacrifice or special effort expended for the benefit of another Business Unit or individual. Often, the Power of One could be as simple as passing along a key piece of information that helps close a sale. In every case, Partners, teams and Business Units are recognized for putting the good of the company above their own self-interests to the resounding applause of their Partners. You can even hear the Partners in our branches cheer as these meetings are video-conferenced in all our locations.

Publicly Praising Our Partners

Public recognition occurs at every company meeting. Good efforts are announced with pride, such as:

  • Customer survey results
  • Safety statistics
  • New project sales, project starts and completions
  • Meeting schedules and budgets
  • Achieving training milestones
  • Any event or circumstance that reflects special efforts by our Partners
  • Contributions by our Partners in external activities
  • Partner anniversaries

Sharing Letters from Our Customers

We often receive letters from customers, vendors and other Partners complimenting a TDPartner or a team. We read these at company meetings and sometimes share them in our newsletters. Kind words are worth celebrating!

Lessons Learned

The mark of maturity is in studying the results and identifying the lessons learned. The way TDIndustries supports such efforts, and the hard decisions that sometimes come along, builds the courage to pioneer and to try again. We are not embarrassed by our failures, but recognize that without risk you will not find growth. This philosophy applies to individual Partner efforts as well as to those pursued by a team or the company.

It's the "Thank You" That Counts

All Partners are encouraged to recognize and compliment the good efforts in everyone: their peers, those they supervise, and those who supervise them. We encourage the use of "thank you" in our everyday work because it is a small act of kindness that can go far.

In today's hectic pace of doing business, it's easy to forget small courtesies such as a friendly smile, a personal note of congratulations, or a pat on the back for a job well done. Many senior leaders utilize the time-honored practice of a handwritten note.

Simple Partner appreciation events include meals, ice cream delivered to jobsites and pizza served in our offices. Fishing trips and bowling outings are just a few examples of saying "We appreciate you" to our Partners. Each event is attended by Partners from our Senior Leadership Team. Every Partner wears a name badge or has his/her name embroidered on a TD shirt.

The value of expressing sentiments from the heart by offering encouragement, support, friendship and congratulations for our efforts is a part of our culture.

Celebrating Our Partners' Anniversaries

Partner anniversaries are recognized in special ways depending on length of service. Supervisors award Partners completing one year of service receive a TD recognition pin and a signed copy of our company history, A Partnership of the Spirit. All Partners completing 5, 10, 15 and 20 years or more of service are introduced in our monthly business report meetings with a special story about how they have contributed to the success of our company. Their families are invited to share in this celebration, even if travel is required. They also join our Senior Leadership for a special breakfast and receive a gift card.
