UT Southwestern Medical Center

Services: Construction
Industries: Healthcare

When demolition of existing structures and preconstruction work began on UT Southwestern’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital in March of 2011, the owner move-in date was estimated to be Spring 2015. However, because of outstanding teamwork, and the utilization of Lean Construction tools, the hospital opened on December 6th, 2014, months ahead of schedule.

Comprised of 12-floors and 460 beds, the 1,200,000 square-foot medical facility also includes 24 operating rooms, 36 exam rooms, 23 prep recovery rooms, 2 MRIs, multiple IR rooms and cath lab rooms, plus a cafeteria, dining room and an expansive atrium.

One significant hurdle on this project was a 600-ft long utility tunnel that connected the new bed tower to UT Southwestern’s Thermal Energy Plant. To expedite installation, TDIndustries prefabricated all of the utility piping racks in 40-ft lengths TD’s 85,000 sf prefabrication plant in Dallas. This provided the needed structure for the electrical conduits, fire protection main and medical gas oxygen piping systems. All of which were installed together.
